Our Ancestors

Under The AncesTree

Remembrance

Marcus Garvey’s tribute was the first of many odes to our Ancestors. It begat a series of commemorations that will unfold under the AncesTree. Not every memorial will carry the fullness of a celebration — some will be quiet and reflective — but every freedom fighting, truth to power speaking, fearless Ancestor will be remembered, their deeds recounted, and their works carried forward in ours.

We choose to gather under the AncesTree not only for shade, but because it is deeply rooted and has stood the test of time, much like the legacy of our Ancestors. It’s divinely located, hidden away in a mini-forest, high in the hills, basically in the heavens.

And we won’t wait for our flowers to fade before we give them. Living Legends will also be honored while they can still feel the weight of our gratitude and the touch of our love.

Who's Next

This September, we commemorate Kwame Nkrumah — the mighty Osagyefo.

At 9 AM we will begin a short ceremony of libations and meditations. Ones are welcome to share why they hold Nkrumah in such high esteem.

The ceremony is expected to run about 30 minutes. It will be informal, but we will start on time.

If you can’t make it at that hour on a Monday, feel no way. The AncesTree is never closed to you — come light a candle or pour libations at your convenience.

Going forward, once we recognize an Ancestor, their image will take its place on the AncesTree, and an altar has been established to receive invocations of your choosing.

What Not To Expect

This is not a festival. There will be no vendors, no music, no fanfare. What you’ll find instead is stillness, reflection, and the quiet work of remembrance. Come as you are, and come present. Light bites will be served to those in attendance, enough to nourish the body while the spirit does its work.

Directions

Search The AncesTree in Google map or click this link: VRGG+JH, Aburi

Note:

We’re 2 km in from the main road.  The road is decent, but you will need to drive cautiously as there are a couple rough patches.

Uber/Bolt/Yango:

Not reliable in these parts.

Dress For The Bush

However short your visit, protect your arms and legs. Our bush is populated with sand-flies — locally known as no-see-ums — they are not friendly, and they don’t discriminate.

We’ll have Bug Off on hand and a fire pit blazing. That combination is pretty effective. But come prepared, not rescued.

Marcus Garvey Day 2024

The Seed Was Planted. The Tree Is Growing.

What started as a seed is becoming a tradition. August 16th, we gather again to celebrate the vision of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey — with roots music, Ital food, family, and the kind of energy that stays with you long after the day ends. If this speaks to you, it's because it was meant for you. See you soon.
